A good-smelling home can greatly change our domestic experience, making us feel at ease and turning our house into a place of peace and rest where we want to stay.

However, you are a responsible consumer, you are always looking for new ways to reduce the amount of waste you generate in your daily life.

But did you know that there are ways to create homemade air fresheners that are cheap, personalized, and eco-responsible? As you might already imagine, in this article we bring you several suggestions so that you can perfume your home for very little, and at the same time, take advantage of your waste to create something useful.

1. Homemade Air Freshener with Fabric Softener

Do you use fabric softener to wash your clothes? Well, then you already have the basic ingredient for a super home air freshener that will fill your entire house with the smell of clean clothes. To do this, you'll need an empty spray bottle.

Then fill half of it with water and the other half with your favorite fabric softener. And that's it! You now have a super home air freshener in spray format that you can spray on any surface in your home.

You can use it on your sofa, cushions, in your closet, on top of your towels, on your bed, and any textile surface in your home. The scent will permeate every room with a totally irresistible clean laundry smell.

2. Essential Oil Spray Air Freshener

If you want to avoid artificial chemicals, an ideal alternative is essential oils.

They are usually sold in small bottles, so just a few drops dissolved in water can provide a fairly powerful scent. They come in every type you can imagine, with a multitude of different scents: roses, eucalyptus, patchouli, vanilla...

Just fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. If you use a humidifier in your home, you can add a few drops of essential oil mixed with water to evenly distribute the aroma throughout the room.

3. Scented Jelly

Although today you can find jars of scented jelly in any supermarket, you should know that you can also create your own completely personalized air freshener, and more importantly, by reusing containers that you are going to throw away. Plus, the result is usually quite aesthetically pleasing, so it can be an object that serves a dual purpose: both decorative and adding a pleasant scent to your home.

To create your own aromatic jelly, you'll need:a clean, empty glass jar, food coloring, neutral gelatin, salt, and the essential oil of your choice.

First, boil the gelatin in hot water, following the instructions on the package. Then, add your essential oil (the more you add, the more intense it is) along with the food coloring. We'll stir everything well, pour it into the jar, let it cool, and that's it! Our scented jelly is ready!

4. Lavender sachets to scent closets and drawers

Do you have scraps of fabric or old clothes and don't know what to do with them? So all you need is an aromatic plant like lavender or eucalyptus to create a simple and effective air freshener, ideal for closets, drawers, and closed spaces.

5. Homemade air freshener based on baking soda

To make this air freshener, you only need baking soda, an essential oil or fabric softener of your choice, and a spray bottle. The procedure is as follows:

    • Heat the water until it boils (50 ml).
    • Add the essential oil (a splash) or fabric softener (at least 50 ml).
    • Add 15 g of common baking soda.

Once everything is well mixed in the bottle, your homemade baking soda-based air freshener is ready to be sprayed.

6. Use soap scraps as an air freshener

You can also use soap scraps to create fabulous air freshener bags for very little money. The process for making them is no secret: make small cloth bags with leftover clothing scraps and fill them with soap scraps that we have around the house.

Just as we mentioned with the aromatic plant bags, this type of air freshener is ideal to place in closets and drawers so that our clothes always retain a delicious fresh and clean aroma.

7. Antibacterial fragrance for the kitchen

How could we forget the kitchen? It's one of the rooms most exposed to strong odors, as it's common to cook with oils and strong aromas.

The ideal thing in this case is to use natural products that don't pose any kind of danger to our health. Luckily, many foods have antibacterial properties, in addition to eliminating odors and providing a fresh scent in the room.

To create our own antibacterial air freshener for the kitchen, we will need an orange or lemon, a cinnamon stick, water, sugar, and white vinegar.

The process is as follows: boil half a liter of water with cinnamon, add the orange or lemon peel, and a few tablespoons of sugar. Then, mix it with the vinegar and let it cool, then store it in our spray bottle.

8. Spices for exotic home fragrances

If you want your home to transport you to some of the most exotic places in the world, there's nothing like creating your own air fresheners using aromatic spices such as cloves, ginger, or allspice.

All you have to do is infuse them in hot water and then put the liquid in a spray bottle so you can spray it throughout your home.

9. Aromatic plants for a natural and fresh scent

It's not necessary to create a product to make our home smell clean and fresh. If we want to achieve a lasting scent without having to constantly spray surfaces, we can opt for aromatic plants. Some of our favorites for adding a natural scent to our home are basil, mint, rosemary, and thyme.
